The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and Spain, with the International Astronomical Union (IAU), are announcing a Dark and Quiet Skies for Science and Society conference. The Instituto de AstrofÃsica de Canarias (IAC) at Santa Cruz de La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain, will host the conference from Sunday 3 October to Thursday 7 October 2021.Â
The Conference will focus on the implementation of recommendations. In particular, it will identify both the technical and political actions needed for the recommendation’s practical realisation. The conference will also identify stakeholders and partners to collaborate to implement a satisfactory solution for preserving dark and quiet skies. The meeting’s programme includes talks and papers selected through a call for abstracts.

Participants
The Conference addresses private industry involved in technology development that potentially emits light or radio signals interfering with astronomy, astronomers, and urban planners. Furthermore, UNOOSA strives to support gender mainstreaming in its programmes. Moreover, the Office is also committed to ensuring a balanced representation from different perspectives. To this end, applications from female applicants are particularly encouraged.
